From Kitchen Oven to Industrial Innovation: The Tobin Apparatus Story
Every great business begins with a problem waiting to be solved. For some, the solution comes in a flash of inspiration. For us at Tobin Apparatus, it came through a series of trial-and-error moments, a ruined batch of paint, a kitchen oven, and a relentless refusal to take "no" for an answer.
Looking back at our journey from a small-town grocery store to a custom USA manufacturing facility built in 2016, our story is a testament of listening to customers, and keeping manufacturing right here at home.
The Spark: An Unfillable Order Our story truly began in the early 2000s. After selling a small grocery business, the goal was simple: sell safety equipment to local fire departments and factories. When the inventory was placed online, the internet did what it does best—it connected us with a customer who needed something that didn't exist yet. A driving instructor in New York placed an order for small, multi-colored traffic cones. The problem? The supplier only manufactured orange cones in small sizes. When we called the customer to cancel, he refused to take "no" for an answer. "Paint them, do something," he said. "I need colored cones." So, we went to the hardware store, bought a can of spray paint, and went to work. That first batch flaked and peeled almost immediately. But instead of giving up, we researched, pivoted to vinyl dye, and successfully shipped the order. Word spread, and soon, we were shipping custom-colored cones all over the United States.
The Turning Point: The Melting Pot Growth always brings new challenges. One day, a order came in from Richard Petty’s Racing Experience in NC. They needed white and yellow cones—and they needed them fast. In the dead of a hot, humid summer, we painted the cones in a rush and next-day-aired them to Florida. But the humidity and wet paint created a disaster. Packed tightly together, the paint bonded. When the package arrived, the cones were one, inseparable glob. They went straight into the dumpster, and we had to refund the entire order, including the expensive overnight shipping. It was a crushing blow. But it was also the exact moment we realized that if we wanted a quality product, we had to control the manufacturing process ourselves.
The Kitchen Oven Prototype Driven by a need to do things right, we ordered samples of liquid PVC. Using body putty, we sculpted a crude cone mold by hand. The very first custom Tobin traffic cone wasn't made in a high-tech factory—it was baked right in our family kitchen oven. Once the concept was proven, we took that body-putty prototype to a local foundry, had professional molds cast, and moved production out of the kitchen and into a father’s garage. Armed with an industrial oven and custom, handmade equipment, we were officially in the manufacturing business.
Revolutionizing Fleet Safety A couple of years into production, a customer called asking for magnets to be embedded into the bases of our 7-inch cones. When we asked why, they introduced us to the utility and oil industries' 360 walk around safety programs Also known as the circle of safety program. Drivers needed small, highly durable cones they could keep right on the front seat or in a tight compartment. When parked, they would place the magnetic cone on the hood or tailgate. To drive away, the worker was forced to walk completely around the vehicle to retrieve the cone, ensuring they checked for hazards. We figured out how to seamlessly embed magnets into the soft, durable PVC bases. Today, those very same 7-inch magnetic cones are an industry standard, keeping fleet drivers and utility crews safe across North America every single day.
Built in the USA, Built to Last As demand grew, so did our vision. In 2016, we achieved a major milestone by building our own state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Greentop, Missouri. Moving production into a proper factory allowed us to scale, but our core philosophy never changed: listen to the customer, innovate constantly, and build it to last. That same drive later inspired us to expand into agriculture, creating our heavy-duty Poly Pickup Bands to solve the headache of bent metal bands on hay balers and choppers. Whether we are protecting a fleet driver on a job site or helping a farmer harvest their field, Tobin Apparatus stands for American ingenuity. We started in a kitchen oven, and we are proud to say we are still manufacturing quality into every single product today.
